House of Soul Food

Just yesterday, a good friend of mine asked me if I wanted to get some lunch with him. Little did I know, we’d be embarking on one of the most unforgettable lunches ever.

From the moment we got out of the car, we could smell the aroma of mouth-watering bbq as we approached the entrance. The smoke in the air coming from the back of the restaurant where the ribs, brisket, chicken…etc. were being cooked, added to our excitement before walking in. We didn’t know what we were getting ourselves into until we saw customers’ plates filled with delicious food. Luckily, we were only third in line (the line got longer as the lunch hour went on). I ordered the pork ribs and fried chicken combo. One of my sides was potato salad and I substituted my other side (white or wheat bread) with cornbread; best move ever.

The food came out in no more than 10 minutes. We grabbed napkins, forks, knives, and straws for our sweetened summer iced tea. I still remember the sound of my first bite into the chicken thigh. It was so crispy and the flavor was absolutely fantastic. The pork ribs had just the right amount of sauce on it and was tender in the most perfect way. Potato salad and cornbread were great to accompany the meat on my plate. My friend liked the chicken so much that we went ahead and ordered two more pieces for each of us after we finished our meal. The amount of stars on its Yelp page doesn’t do this restaurant justice. Let the pictures of people’s dishes on the Yelp page to convince you to at least try this place once: http://www.yelp.com/biz/lillie-maes-house-of-soul-food-santa-clara.

Now I know this restaurant isn’t in downtown San Jose. If you’re like me and you want to take a small break from the San Pedro Square Market or Sonoma Chicken Coop, drive the extra 10 minutes to try this really tasty food. You can even check out the menu by going to their main page: http://www.houseofsoulfood.net/menu.html.

I’m interested in hearing what all of your experiences are like at Lillie Mae’s. Maybe you’ve eaten here many times. Maybe you’ve only eaten here once and you’re never going back. Either way, let me know what you think by emailing me. I’m definitely going back soon because like their sign reads, “Our Food is Soul Good”.
